Studio Skulls and found objects

(From left to right) Scraper artifact ( multipurpose scraping tool), raccoon skull and jawbones cleaned in a light bleach solution and then scrubbed with soap, another scraper artifact, bivalve fossils in limestone.
(From left to right) Flint Ball artifact (carried by native americans to make tools), very large and old opossum skull that rodents have been chewing. Both objects were found in a sandy creek.

(From left to right) Dehydrated grey tree frog found in a cornfield (in the pill bottle)(gift), german shepard skull (i didn't know what breed of a dog the skull was when i found it but word of mouth spreads fast and a farmer says this was feral german shepard he shot), and miscellaneous rocks, fossils, and stuff I find when I'm out walking around.

red blinking lights?

So, we're driving on gravel. Towards wherever it is we're going. Probably to B-Town or a gas station. Its hard to stay on track when you're easily distracted. We drive past the Bellefountain Cemetary where we see little, blinking, colorful lights studding the terrain. Odd. We drive inside and investigate.

This is what we found:

Tiny hummingbirds that turned red

blue

and green.

i'm a doodlin' fool. (revisited 7-19)

I want my buddy Rachel to write a poem to go with my silly lil' doodle. When she writes the poem I'll post the poem. And she better write it or I'm gonna come to Oregon and let the air out of her tires so as to inconvenience her...slightly. That is a threat, Rachel. And this better not be like your Fish City cross stitching pattern that you have yet to finish.

The Albino: (7-18)

smile dear,
you've got so much to be glad for
listen dear,
you've got a lot of friends
to save
there was the last one
(was his tail whiter than
the first?)
we heard him tick-
tick-
ticking
til the sonic waves
rained down
now
we flutter round the wreckage
we are looking for survivors
surrounded by the ghosts of our
deerly
departed

These drawings were made for an animal that died a long time ago. I never saw him alive. All I saw were his feet laying on a chair. I still think about that day and that squirrel. And sometimes I wonder why everything I draw about or write about are lifecycles ending. Somber tone. My bad?

Ready for a Weekend.

1. Bird's Nest at a Gas Station in Minnestoa.

I like where birds put their babies.

2. Bullsnake on the Side of the Road.
The Bullsnake was very much dead. I thought he was sun bathing and tried to sneak up on it with my camera. Sneaking up on a dead snake isn't very hard. Pretty guy, though. Too bad about the hit and run.

flood.

Iowa has gotten a lot of rain. The earth has reached a saturation point. Puddles have become stagnant pools of bubbly film and disease that will not retreat into the ground. I've seen kids swimming in those stagnant, bubbly puddles and all I can think about are the staff infections they're about to bring home.

I hear people talk about water a lot. How many inches we're getting, are the going to raise the dam, how will this affect the level of the river, how will this water affect everything. Roads are going to close, the access points for boats are shut down, people with campsites by the river gotta move all of their shit to higher ground or it'll float away. Its pretty impressive and kind of surreal. Fish are swimming in the flood water by the side of the road while gas tanks and giant trees float by, dragged by the current.

Water also shapes sandstone. Thats how history is made. And this photo is a sandstone carving not shaped by water but by a human hand. This entire post was just a way to show you a photo I like that sort of relates to water and...the river. This stone carving is on some bluffs off the des moines river. There were a lot of nice carvings but this was the best one. I would have stayed longer but the bugs kept flying into my nose. I had to climb a long way to get to these carvings, now, the river is so high I'd barely have to step up.

I guess that's it.
