Oyster Mushroom?

There is a pile of elm wood on the side of the garage.  It's good to have a stockpile of wood.  Its even better when your stockpile begins to grow edible mushrooms.

These oyster mushrooms were found growing from the fire fodder on Cinco de Mayo.  They were quickly plucked and eaten after they were fried in butter for five minutes.  Delicious!

  1. This mushroom is very Georgia O'Keefe like ;) How did you know it was an edible mushroom? Obviously it was ok since you didn't die from eating it, but before that how did you know? I'm impressed and slightly jealous of your wilderness ability and knowledge of edible things that you find in the woods. :)

  2. I have a few mushroom field guides that tell you what is/isn't safe to eat.

But I didn't have them when we found them.

God bless iphones. everyone is a genius with an i phone.

  5. Wow, it's pretty early in the year for pleurotus. Make sure you save that log, put it on top of a dedicated pile of logs in a moist shady spot and it should propagate to the rest of them, you'll have a pleurotus farm.

  6. that's incredible. we have an old, wooden doghouse....would that be a good spot or does it need a lot of air flow? I don't know much about mushrooms but I do know that it was delicious.

    1. I don't think it needs a lot of air flow but it would need to be able to get rained on unless you feel like watering it. Over time, I'd expect either the mycelium to spread through the other logs or spores to start new mycelia in them

  7. OK, so check this out: yesterday we were out and found not only some dried up pleurotus, but a fresh maitake / hen. I've never seen one of those before late september, and usually later than that. this year is crazy
